Due to council policies, the City of Greater Geelong are unable to provide a testimonial.
Background and aims
From April to June 2023, MosaicLab, a Melbourne based community engagement consultancy, conducted a community consultation process to update the City of Greater Geelong’s Waterfront Masterplan.
The resulting document will guide development and public realm upgrades along the Corio Bay foreshore throughout the next 10 to 20 years. The City of Greater Geelong aimed to engage with people who live, work and visit the area to understand what they value and the future changes they wish to see. Feedback from this engagement will be used to prepare a draft Masterplan for the waterfront.
Our role
Global Research was commissioned to analyse the data received from the Geelong community and provide a report presenting the community’s feedback. Global Research collaborated with the City of Greater Geelong and MosaicLab teams to deliver this project, and the best possible outcome for the community.
Our primary task was the preparation of a comprehensive analysis of both qualitative and quantitative data provided by 361 survey respondents who participated via the City of Greater Geelong’s ‘Have Your Say’ website.
Design and method
During the analysis phase, all survey submissions with written comments were read and sorted (coded) into relevant categories, establishing a framework of themes arising from each qualitative question.
This analysis was delivered in a comprehensive report to The City of Greater Geelong, combining both MosaicLab’s presentation of face-to-face activities and Global Research’s detailed analysis of survey data. The Waterfront Masterplan - Stage 1 Engagement Report (Full version) can be accessed at the top of the this page. Global Research’s analysis ranges from pages 26-57.
Analysis of written comments highlighted the key themes and topics that arose in respondents’ answers. These themes included: Outdoor Leisure and Recreation Activities; Improvements to Amenities; Urban Design Preferences and Suggestions; Commercial Enterprise Preferences and Suggestions; Transportation Issues and Preferences; Overall Management Issues and Preferred Focus; Inclusion and Diversity Improvements.
Quantitative findings were displayed in accessible tables and charts. Results were also synthesised into a concise summary of key findings, providing a quick snapshot of salient points.
Result
MosaicLab seamlessly incorporated Global Research’s detailed analysis within their report and presented a comprehensive overview of all findings.
The clear presentation of data allowed the City of Greater Geelong to understand community aspirations and desired amendments to the area. Our writeup discussed frequently and infrequently expressed opinions, the diversity of points raised, and the weighting of opinions on relevant topics.
Data from written comments, for example, showed that respondents consistently envisaged the area as an outdoor leisure and recreation space. Quantitative data presented in the report exhibited qualities or amendments that respondents sought, how respondents want to use the space, how the area meets the needs of certain groups, and what information would improve future community engagement.
The results from this report were presented to the community to demonstrate the outcomes of the engagement.
Outcomes
Feedback gathered from this engagement is currently informing a draft masterplan for the Geelong Waterfront. Following a second round of consultation, the masterplan will be finalised in late 2024.
